As violence rippled through the United States in the later part of 2021, we collectively braced ourselves in what we defined as our new realities. Overwhelming fear of illness from Covid or worse, death from Covid. Life was shifting. In the months of September and October 2021, California faced political instability and civil unrest, citizens of the state rallied and protested, and then, a line in the sand had been drawn.  The vaccinated established a status of the ideal, law-abiding citizen and model of perfection.  Those unvaccinated had become a wanton and reckless second class of citizens, shamed and feared.

In this piece, the foundation of the square of canvas (163 x 163 cm) is folded as an origami lotus flower.  The impression of lines once unfolded, now geometrically and harmoniously balanced in triangles and shapes. The symbolism of the lotus flower is purity, enlightenment, self-regeneration and rebirth. This representation of the lotus is the budding gift of hope that presented itself in this piece.

The journey into the heart is a tumultuous yet transformative subject to unpack. Deconstructing its valuable lessons are embodied through this work. Exploring my inner child in movement and play, I used both hands to paint with equal measure and use. I found this practice to release tensions of right-hand dominance and function by load-balancing my capacity.

The lifecycle begins as a perfectly torn square of canvas (163x163 cm) folded as an origami heart. Origami has always been a part of my mathematical curiosity as a child. The precision and folds, compartmentalized by quadrants, depicted the shades and shapes of this new quarantine reality.  Once the canvas unfolded, the deepened impression of lines provoke the space with images displayed in the color wheel of my life in the time of Covid.

This self-portrait defines the fierce realities during the quarantine: sensuality, sexuality, chaos, and the balancing the heart and the mind.

In search for inspiration for this new piece, I was captivated to go on Clubhouse to peruse the attitudes and soul spaces of different rooms. It was Friday night, on March 19th. I entered DJ Mika Kitten’s at Warehouse Club, where she spins every Friday night.

It was familiar space - an immersion of binaural beats and sound. It captivated me to paint, my heart and mind activated to receive.

Duality

I have always been captivated by Native American and Egyptian heritage. As a child, I dreamed of touching artifacts, exploring Egyptology with a microscope. Now, I feel I channel my inner wise woman, deeply rooted in the native history of this land. There have been curious comparisons between these two mystic cultures and its duality and its symbolism intrigues me to discuss it.

I venture to dive deeper into the human psyche, our humanity, our trauma, our duality masked in what we see and what others perceive us to be.

This duality has caused a great divide among us. Causing fear, hatred and violence.

It begins in the intimate settings of our homes, a car ride talk, a fire side chat, a clubhouse gathering to speak our differences, to clear perceptions, to educate and be compassionate. It’s time to be vigilant and aware.

Love and much respect, from my heart to yours,

Remediosa

How many times I’ve toiled with the colors and shape. This canvas even made it to the shower, washing off 50% of the paint. The process reflected the title...the self imposed prison sentence, if you will. The exhaustion of lack-full thoughts. I realized that these narratives took shape because I had disconnected from my heart. My mind and intellect fully engaged and it was torture. Finally realizing this, I stopped and reconnected to my heart space. Hand in heart and the other hand on my head - I reconnected visualizing the symbol of infinity.

This shape that came to me in transmissions is the shape of the goddess - the Soulouette. On the island of Malta, off the coast of the Italian peninsula, as seen in its ancient architecture, is the shape of the goddess. Round features, large and majestic. Imagine this shape is the vessel of our soul, the spirit silhouette. Sovereign. Detached. Adorned. Yearning for connection.

Only in its most authentic self can she break free from the shackles of her own prison.

AN ODE TO FEARLESS WOMEN

I think your bones were made in an elsewhere place. How else does one explain this inconceivable strength that makes you. The way you look into danger’s mouth and see no cemetery or death. Instead, carve your name into its teeth with a switchblade, defeat it so effortlessly and throw your head back and laugh. Paradox girl, mighty woman, you are the thing that terrifies them. Both monster and maiden, both cure and poison, all of these things, and at the same time human. Defined by no man, you are your own story, blazing through the world, turning history into herstory. And when they dare to tell you about
all the things you cannot be, you smile and tell them, 'I am both war and woman and you cannot stop me.’
